What was the last thing you made from scratch?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for November 19, 2007:
Can't remember, but i do know what i'd like to make.
I'm not architect or drafter or anything, but i'd like to design my own home from the ground up. It's something that's been in the planning stages for some time now, so it's something that i'd like to make a reality. No dependence on oil, no water wasted, and if possible, placing it between nature and civilization. A fine balance, to be sure, but it'd be worth it.

funny. I said the same thing about building. :-) good luck. where will you start?
A long time ago - thirty-five years, to be exact - I did that. Although at the time, green was not such a concern, so that part didn't fit into the picture. But I did design and help to build a house with no previous knowledge of anything from either a construction or an architectural standpoint. And the darn thing is still standing, and my kid's dad, the man who insisted that I could do it, is still living in it.
His dad and he and my brothers built it. I helped but I was massively pregnant and so of limited use.
I started with a drawing and went from there.
Much like Semi said, illumination (that's a synonym ;p), i'm gonna draw up a blueprint. From there, maybe get some assistance from other drafters or builders, who would be able to give me some pointers along the way, as maybe there was angle i missed or something.
I'm optimistic about the project. And know that you built one, Sem, is inpspiring.

There is a great meditation/reflection/story in Dwell magazine about some people who did just that too.

-dawn aka dusk aka sfl aka light aka illumination. illumination– that's a little heady for such a humble light as me. hahahahahhhhhhhh.
I wish (well, only sort of) that I had a photo I could upload…but I tend to put my past waaaaay behind me when I get the chance.
It was a two story, two bedroom with a shingled mansard roof and not nearly enough windows!
The problem with building a house with other people who don't know about building houses is that sometimes they make decisions on their own…like, “Oh, we can't put a window here, there's a beam here. Screw it, forget the window.”
Oh, to have been able to be everywhere at once!
